Pesaro, Pesaro e Urbino, Italy

Pesaro, the ancient Pisaurum, which was the base of the Della Rovere Lordship until 1631, the Costanza Fortress and the treasures housed in the museums evoke the courtly importance of the town. In Piazza del Popolo, the Town Hall, Palace of the Paggeria and the renaissance Ducal Palace look out on the fountain with its tritons and sea horses. In the Town Museums (the Art Gallery and the Ceramics Museum), apart from the splendid Pala Pesaro by Giovanni Bellini, paintings by Guido Reni, Marco Zoppo, Jacobello del Fiore and Simone Cantarini are also preserved. In August, the birthplace of Gioacchino Rossini offers singing connoisseurs the Rossini Opera Festival (ROF), an important event which is known world-wide. The Cathedral, the Oliveriano Archaeological Museum, Rossini’s House, the Music Conservatory and the art-nouveau Ruggeri town house should not be missed.
